Microbiome basics
How the gut microbiome test works
This overview explains the sample-to-report workflow in plain language. It is educational content, not medical advice or clinical interpretation.
What is the gut microbiome?
The gut microbiome is the community of bacteria and other microbes associated with the digestive tract. A stool sample can contain microbial DNA that helps identify which bacteria were detected in that sample at that point in time.
What does 16S rRNA sequencing mean?
16S rRNA sequencing looks at a marker region of bacterial DNA. The result is a profile of detected bacteria and their relative abundance in the sequenced sample. It is useful for education, exploration, and tracking over time, but it is not a diagnostic test and should not replace medical care.
From kit to report
- 1Activate the barcode on your collection tube.
- 2Collect the sample using the kit instructions and return mailer.
- 3The lab receives the kit, extracts DNA, sequences marker DNA, and processes the data.
- 4When released, your report appears on the dashboard with charts, tables, and downloads.
